O voto, os quarenta e dois passos,
e a clareza que abre o caminho
The vow, the forty-two steps,
and the clarity that opens the way
Esta semana lemos duas porções como uma só, Matot e Masei, e com elas se encerra todo o Livro de Bamidbar, o Livro do Deserto. É uma síntese de três ensinamentos: o voto que já é real antes de se cumprir, os quarenta e dois passos que são o mapa da nossa alma, e a clareza que encontra Luz até no pensamento mais escuro.
This week we read two portions as one, Matot and Masei, and with them the entire Book of Bamidbar, the Book of the Desert, comes to a close. It is a synthesis of three teachings: the vow that is already real before it is fulfilled, the forty-two steps that are the map of our soul, and the clarity that finds Light even in the darkest thought.
Matot abre de um jeito incomum. Moshe não fala primeiro a todo o povo, como é o costume da Torah. Ele fala primeiro aos chefes das tribos. E o assunto que ele traz é sério: nedarim, os votos.
Matot opens in an unusual way. Moshe doesn't speak first to the whole people, as is the Torah's custom. He speaks first to the heads of the tribes. And the subject he brings is serious: nedarim, vows.
"Quando um homem fizer um voto... não profanará a sua palavra; fará conforme tudo o que saiu de sua boca" (Números 30:2). Em palavras simples: uma vez que a promessa sai da nossa boca, ela deixa de ser "só uma ideia". Ela se torna algo real, que espera para ser cumprido.
"When a man makes a vow... he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that has proceeded out of his mouth" (Numbers 30:2). In simple words: once a promise leaves our mouth, it stops being "just an idea." It becomes something real, waiting to be fulfilled.
Rav Berg ensina um segredo profundo sobre a fala. Existe a realidade que tocamos e vemos, apenas 1% do que realmente existe. E existe uma realidade oculta, os outros 99%, de onde vem tudo o que ainda vamos manifestar.
Rav Berg teaches a profound secret about speech. There's the reality we touch and see, only 1% of what actually exists. And there's a hidden reality, the other 99%, from which everything we have yet to manifest comes.
No instante em que pronunciamos um voto verdadeiro, ele já está completo nos 99%. Só falta uma coisa: trazê-lo até aqui, até o 1% que vivemos todos os dias. A palavra não descreve a realidade, ela a constrói.
The instant we speak a true vow, it is already complete in the 99%. Only one thing is missing: bringing it here, to the 1% we live in every day. The word doesn't describe reality, it builds it.
Por que Moshe fala primeiro aos chefes das tribos, e não ao povo? Rav Berg ensina que um líder é, antes de tudo, alguém que governa a própria consciência. E é exatamente essa a lição dos votos: não se trata de controlar os outros, mas de deixar nossa mente clara governar o caos do dia a dia, em vez do contrário.
Why does Moshe speak first to the heads of the tribes, and not to the people? Rav Berg teaches that a leader is, above all, someone who governs their own consciousness. And that's exactly the lesson of the vows: it isn't about controlling others, but about letting our clear mind govern the chaos of daily life, instead of the other way around.
Quem cumpre a sua palavra já está agindo como líder da própria realidade.
Whoever keeps their word is already acting as the leader of their own reality.
Eitan Yardeni aprofunda ainda mais essa ideia. Ele ensina que, antes de virmos a este mundo, cada uma das nossas almas já fez um grande voto: tornar-se quem realmente somos, alinhada à nossa essência mais verdadeira.
Eitan Yardeni takes this idea even deeper. He teaches that before we came into this world, each of our souls already made one great vow: to become who we truly are, aligned with our truest essence.
Todo pequeno voto que cumprimos nesta vida é, na verdade, mais um pedaço desse primeiro e grande voto. E como o cumprimos? Não com dureza ou julgamento de nós mesmos, Yardeni ensina que é através da misericórdia que chegamos até lá.
Every small vow we fulfill in this life is, in truth, one more piece of that first, great vow. And how do we fulfill it? Not with harshness or self-judgment, Yardeni teaches that it's through mercy that we get there.
A porção de Masei abre de um jeito que parece o trecho mais seco de toda a Torah: uma lista de lugares onde o povo de Israel acampou, durante os quarenta anos no deserto. São quarenta e duas paradas, do Egito até a fronteira da Terra Prometida.
The portion of Masei opens in a way that seems like the driest passage in the whole Torah: a list of places where the people of Israel camped, during the forty years in the desert. There are forty-two stops, from Egypt to the border of the Promised Land.
À primeira vista, cidades que nem existem mais. Por que a Torah dedicaria tanto espaço a isso? O Baal Shem Tov, um mestre kabalista profundamente ligado a esta linhagem, dá a resposta: essas quarenta e duas jornadas não são apenas a história de um povo antigo. Elas são o mapa de cada alma, incluindo a sua e a minha. Do nascimento até a Correção Final, todos nós passamos por esses mesmos quarenta e dois estágios, alguns já vividos, outros ainda por vir.
At first glance, cities that don't even exist anymore. Why would the Torah devote so much space to this? The Baal Shem Tov, a Kabbalistic master deeply connected to this lineage, gives the answer: these forty-two journeys are not just the story of an ancient people. They are the map of every soul, including yours and mine. From birth to the Final Correction, all of us pass through these same forty-two stages, some already lived, others still to come.

Here is the most powerful part of this week, and that's why I want to give it a special space just below. The number forty-two is no coincidence: it's also the number of words in the Ana Bekoach, the ancient prayer built from the Name used in the very work of Creation.
O Kabbalah Centre ensina que, por causa dessa correspondência, esta semana carrega uma energia de "nível de semente", uma verdadeira chance de recomeço. Não importa quantas das nossas quarenta e duas paradas já sentimos completas, ou quantas ainda parecem distantes. Cada parada, difícil ou fácil, foi necessária para levar o povo um passo mais perto da Terra Prometida. Cada parada da sua vida está fazendo o mesmo por você.
The Kabbalah Centre teaches that, because of this correspondence, this week carries a "seed-level" energy, a true chance for a fresh start. It doesn't matter how many of our forty-two stops already feel complete, or how many still feel distant. Every stop, difficult or easy, was necessary to bring the people one step closer to the Promised Land. Every stop in your life is doing the same for you.

With Matot-Masei, the entire Book of Bamidbar comes to an end. Forty years of journeys, tests, and corrections are completed. Michael Berg teaches that, in this portion, Moshe reaches a rare level of total clarity, a prophecy where nothing remains confused or hidden.
A ferramenta que ele nos dá é simples e profunda: todo pensamento negativo carrega, escondida dentro dele, uma pequena faísca de Luz. Nosso trabalho não é brigar com o pensamento, nem nos julgar por tê-lo. É ficar abertos o suficiente para encontrar a faísca lá dentro, inclusive abrindo espaço para a possibilidade de que estejamos completamente enganados sobre aquele pensamento.
The tool he gives us is simple and profound: every negative thought carries, hidden within it, a small spark of Light. Our work isn't to fight the thought, or to judge ourselves for having it. It's to stay open enough to find the spark inside, including making room for the possibility that we're completely wrong about that thought.
Vivemos agora dentro de Bein HaMetzarim, as Três Semanas, um tempo que muitos chamam de pesado, até triste. Mas Rav Berg ensinou algo que muda tudo: esse não é um tempo de negatividade. É um tempo em que mais Luz está disponível do que o normal, um tempo de fazer milagres, não de lamentar.
We now live within Bein HaMetzarim, the Three Weeks, a time many call heavy, even sad. But Rav Berg taught something that changes everything: this isn't a time of negativity. It's a time when more Light is available than usual, a time for making miracles, not for mourning.
Agora conseguimos ver a semana inteira se juntando. Nossa palavra planta um voto, já real, esperando para ser trazido para casa. Nossa jornada, as 42 paradas, carrega a faísca que cumpre esse voto, parada difícil incluída. E a clareza é a ferramenta que junta tudo: quando ficamos humildes, abertos, e procuramos a faísca até no pensamento mais escuro, fazemos exatamente o que Moshe fez ao final do deserto, transformamos quarenta anos de jornada em um só instante de visão clara.
Now we can see the whole week coming together. Our word plants a vow, already real, waiting to be brought home. Our journey, the 42 stops, carries the spark that fulfills that vow, difficult stop included. And clarity is the tool that ties it all together: when we become humble, open, and search for the spark even in the darkest thought, we do exactly what Moshe did at the end of the desert, we turn forty years of journeying into a single instant of clear vision.
