The Light of Renewal

Karen Berg's perspective
on the New Moon of Cancer

CHODESH TOV · an empty chalice, ready to receive

This page gathers Karen Berg's loving perspective on the New Moon of Cancer, the only month of the year ruled by the Moon. As she teaches, we arrive in this universe this week as an empty chalice, ready and prepared to receive.

Eight insights · New Moon of Cancer
01

Every new moon is a fresh start

At the end of each day, we look back and reflect so we can begin the next day free of the past. At the end of the week, the same. And at the end of the month, we can review the entire 30 days, reset our goals, and prepare for the new month.

Every new moon is a renewal and a fresh start on our spiritual path. These openings in the cosmos exist to help us fight life's difficulties, being conscious of these windows in time is an invaluable gift.

"A new lunar month is an opportunity to begin again. We can leave our past behind and be born anew." Karen Berg
02

The Moon rules us, once a year

The New Moon of Cancer is especially powerful, because the Moon is the celestial body that will rule us for the next 30 days. This happens only once a year.

It's no accident that the Moon is closer to us than every other celestial body, she relates most intimately to our being and our world. Every night she shows us a different face, seeking the Light, just as we do.

03

We arrive as an empty chalice

Karen offers this week's central image: it's as if we came into the universe carrying an empty chalice, ready and prepared to receive. And the spiritual law is loving in its simplicity.

"Wherever a vessel exists, the Light will fill it automatically. This week, we arrive ready and willing to receive the Light of renewal." Karen Berg

We are, like the Moon, vessels for the Light. In the Light is the satisfaction and fulfillment of every possible desire, and we came to this human experience to learn to draw it in and, in doing so, earn it.

04

Chukat and the ashes that purify

This week's portion and spiritual guide is Chukat, which arrives at the perfect moment to work in coherence with the cosmos's energy. In Chukat, the special healing formula made from the ashes of the red heifer is given to the Israelites, used to purify.

Just as we bathe the body every day, our consciousness and spirit also need renewal and cleansing. Chukat comes during the month of Cancer to clear away the cobwebs and open space for the Light that's coming toward us.

05

The Creator created only good

We often ask ourselves why life doesn't go as we expected, why challenges arise, why we're struck by pain. Is this the life the Creator intended for us? Karen answers with loving firmness: a resounding no.

"The Creator created only good; anything different from that was created by ourselves." Karen Berg

It's through the ability to open and purify our vessel to receive that we'll be able to receive the Light we desire. The task isn't to change the Light, it's to clean the vessel that receives it.

06

The purest vessel is a vessel of love

Here is the heart of all of Karen's teaching, and her signature. The Moon wanes, and because of that, the Cancerian feels something is always missing. The cure, kabbalists teach, is one and the same: caring, sharing, loving, and giving to others.

"The purest vessel for receiving the Creator's Light is a vessel of love." Karen Berg

The more we remember to think of others, give to others, and show kindness, the more we purify and expand our own capacity to receive. We are the Moon, and we come ready to receive only because, finally, we're ready to give.

07

The task: maintaining this state all year

We approach the New Moon of Cancer and the gift of Chukat's purifying ashes to receive exactly this: a space ready and worthy for the Creator to inhabit. We are new moons ready to receive the Light that our spirits, minds, and bodies await.

But Karen is clear about the challenge: our only task is to maintain this state, not just today, or this week, or this month, but the entire year. Renewal isn't an instant; it's a consciousness to be sustained.

08

You are a new moon in the sky

Karen closes with a blessing that's also a declaration of who we really are when we open ourselves: send away any blockages and fears, and welcome the new Light into your being.

"You are now a corrected vessel. You are a brand new moon in the night sky. You are healed, renewed, and whole, shining beautifully like that great ball of Light." Karen Berg, closing

You're in a state of receiving in order to help and give to others. You are a channel for the Creator.

The Practice · Karen's inventory

The New Moon's spiritual inventory

1
Before the new moon begins, in your meditations, take a spiritual inventory of your life, as Karen directly guides in this article.
2
List your gratitude. What are you most grateful for? What were the joys of the past year? Focus on the many gifts and write them down on paper.
3
Name what's lacking. Think about what you'd like to see more of in the coming year. Whatever lack you feel, write it down, this brings your needs from the unconscious into the conscious.
חֹדֶשׁ טוֹב Chodesh Tov, "A good month"
4
Give thanks and let go. It's time to thank the past for its gifts, and then release it. Begin again with a new vessel, pure and willing to receive.
5
Empty the chalice. Send away any blockages, fears, and blind spots. Remember: wherever there's an open vessel, the Light fills it automatically.
6
Become a vessel of love. Make a gesture of care, sharing, or kindness with someone today. That's what purifies and expands your capacity to receive. You receive because you're ready to give.

If I arrive at this month as an empty chalice, what do I need to release so the Creator's Light can fill me again?

Two letters, a single meditation · not one turning into the other, but the two together

Every month is represented by a zodiac sign and a planet, both created by a Hebrew letter. The Sefer Yetzirah (the Book of Formation), written by Abraham the Patriarch some 3,800 years ago, teaches that the Hebrew letters are the DNA of the universe: the physical representation of the energy forces that created everything, from planets to galaxies.

The month of Cancer is built from two letters together: the letter ח (Chet), which formed the month of Tammuz, and the letter ת (Tav), which formed the Moon. It isn't one letter turning into the other, they are both in a single meditation.

By meditating on these letters daily, we plant the seeds of what we wish to draw into our lives in the month ahead. Print them, stick them on the wall, carry them with you, make them a regular part of your day.

Meditation of the Month
The Tetragrammaton combination

The four letters of the month

Every month has a different combination of the Tetragrammaton, to draw in the unique, specific Light of that month. The Tetragrammaton, the Creator's four-letter Name, represents the highest level of spirituality. Through these four channels we receive the Light needed to free ourselves from our nature, which is the spiritual work we came into this world to do. The world of the Tetragrammaton is the metaphysical world, where reality isn't bound by physical limitations. Each letter of this Name points to a different dimension, and meditating on the combination gives us the ability to free ourselves from who we once were and become who we came here to be.
