The New Moon of Virgo opens the journey
to Rosh Hashanah and Simchat Torah
This page is a map. In the coming weeks, the cosmos opens one of the most powerful windows of the year: 52 days that run from the New Moon of Virgo to Simchat Torah. Here is the countdown, the whole path, and a practice for every day.
to the New Moon of Virgo
If there is a single thing to learn in the whole month of Virgo, it is this. Teshuvah is not repenting: it is turning back time to uproot and transform the negative seeds we planted. The Kabbalah Centre organizes the process into four phases, and days 10 to 13 of the journey walk through them one at a time.
Coming soon, here: Michael Berg's meditation on Teshuvah.
The New Moon of Virgo does not open just any month. It opens a 52-day map the Creator laid out long before any of us arrived here. Thirty days of preparation in Virgo, followed by 22 days of transformation, from Rosh Hashanah to Simchat Torah.
The Kabbalists use a domestic image to explain it: picture your car going into the shop. Two parts get serviced, the brake (Malchut, knowing when not to act) and the accelerator (Zeir Anpin, acting for the right reasons). Most of us cross the year strong on one side and blind on the other. These 52 days rebuild both.
Michael Berg opens the month with a verse from the Zohar, Karov hashem lechol korav, "the Light of the Creator is close to all who call upon It". And he teaches that the Zohar speaks of exactly this month.
Any work done now yields exponentially, because the distance has shortened. The real obstacle is not lack of opportunity. It is not noticing how wide open the gate is.
Karen Berg teaches that the word Elul is an acronym formed from Ani Le'dodi Ve'dodi Li, "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine". Whoever enters this month expecting a tribunal came in the wrong door.
She tells how, after the error of the Golden Calf, Moshe prayed a second time, and this time he did not ask for forgiveness. He asked for restoration. The difference organizes the whole month: forgiveness cleans the past, restoration gives back the closeness.
Karen Berg attributes the central teaching of Virgo to Rav Berg. Elul is not properly repentance, it is Tashuv-Hei, returning in time to the instant before the error, still uncontaminated.
We do not fix our gaze on the error to suffer over it. We pass through the error, reach the second before it, and remake the choice at the origin. On Rosh Hashanah we will be able to say, calmly: it was not me.
The left column is the way we receive. The question is not whether we deserve to receive, but which silent beliefs govern our receiving. The Kabbalists name four territories where this becomes visible: wisdom, sustenance, health and relationships.
When one of them stays locked for years, even in someone who does all the spiritual work, the blockage is rarely in the effort. It is in a belief the person does not even know they carry, almost always inherited from someone else's life, watched from the outside.
What is revealed in Virgo are the thirteen Attributes of Mercy, thirteen channels that descend and shine into this world throughout the month. On touching them, we see two things at once: how perfect we could be, and how far we are from it.
That is why Virgo carries judgment as its principal correction. And the instruction of the month is categorical: avoid judgment at all cost. The Creator treats us as we treat others, so what we send out is what comes back.
Rav Yehuda Brandwein, Rav Berg's teacher, said that if we used the month of Elul completely, we would not need the instrument of Rosh Hashanah. That is the standard of the month, and it exists to show the size of what is available.
But alongside it comes a warning Karen Berg insists on repeating: be gentle with yourself. Punishing yourself is not the way of the Light. What we receive in these days is the love and the room to change. If the work turns into self-criticism, you have left the path.
We arrive at the New Moon as empty vessels, ready to receive. With every new moon we can leave the past behind and be born again. And this particular new moon opens the entire road that leads to the coming year.
Today's work is not to do more things. It is to want with more truth, and to decide now, not in two weeks, how much time you will give to this journey. Chodesh Tov.
If I arrive at this month as an empty vessel, what do I need to release so the Light of the Creator can fill me again?
The Sefer Yetzirah (the Book of Formation) teaches that the Creator "enthroned the letter י (Yud) over action, forming with it the sign of the maiden in space". That is why the month of Virgo is the month of doing, of detail, of the patient correction of what is not yet ready.
Meditating on the letter Yud throughout the month is planting the seed of what we wish to draw into the year that is beginning. Print the letter, put it on the wall, carry it with you. Make it a regular part of your day.
