Portion of Ekev · The practice

Appreciating before
it arrives

The half of the hundred
that almost nobody does

SEFER HACHINUCH · the switch that opens the passage

In the Ekev lecture, Michael Berg says that half of the hundred daily moments are for what you do not yet have. This page is that half, turned into practice.

The inversion that changes everything

You are not asking

Asking assumes the thing does not yet exist and that you must convince someone to create it. The Essence of the Creator is to give, so what you lack has already been set aside and is already prepared. What does not yet exist is the passage, and the passage opens through appreciation. That is why it comes before, not after.

The two ways of seeing
How lack sees it

I do not have it yet. I will give thanks when it comes, if it comes. For now, all I can do is ask again.

How the Light sees it

It is ready and waiting for you. Appreciate now, and that is precisely what opens the passage it will come through.

The practice · seven steps

Appreciating what has not yet arrived

1
Name the lack precisely. A vague lack cannot be appreciated. Write in a single sentence what is truly missing, not the symptom. I want to earn more is usually the symptom. I want to stop waking up afraid of the end of the month is the lack.
2
Test your certainty in three parts. Michael Berg breaks certainty into parts for a reason: almost always one of them wobbles, and that is where your work is. Say all three out loud.
  • The Light of the Creator exists and surrounds me now.
  • Its Essence is to give, and it desires my good.
  • In this specific case, it wants to give me this.
3
Appreciate the desire, not only the object. The hospice nurse he cites says one of the greatest regrets of those departing is missing having a desire for things. Your desire still pulses, and that alone is a blessing already received that most people never appreciate.
4
Speak in the present, not the future. Not give me. Say: I appreciate that you have already set this aside and are waiting to hand it to me. The tense is not a detail, it is the whole consciousness. In the future you are asking; in the present you are recognising.
5
Feel it before you say it. He is firm on this: it has to be true, complete, real. Stay a few seconds in silence until the body answers, that catch in the chest that comes when you receive something good. If nothing comes, you said words, and a word without consciousness turns nothing on.
6
Fifty and fifty. Of the hundred moments in a day, half for what is already here and half for what has not yet arrived. Fifty is far more than it sounds, and that is why almost nobody closes the count.
7
Review at night, without judgement. Two questions before sleep. How many were real? At what hour of the day did the doubt come back? The answer to the second question is tomorrow's map.
I appreciate that the Light of the Creator has already set this aside for me,
and is waiting to hand it to me.

If it took another year to arrive, would you go on appreciating?

01

The sign that it is working

It is not the thing arriving. It is the anguish around the lack loosening before it arrives. When you can think about it without tightening, the passage has opened.

That is why Michael Berg speaks of a switch and not of a reward. What changes first is consciousness, and the manifestation follows.

02

The trap

Appreciating as a technique to force delivery is still the desire to receive for oneself alone. Appreciation becomes a bargain, and the passage closes again.

THE TEST If it took another year, would you go on appreciating? If the answer is no, it is not appreciation yet.

The seven steps are an applied synthesis, not a list given by the teacher. The three-part certainty, appreciation before the blessing and the regret of the departing come from the lecture. The order and the format are ours.
