Torah Portion Beresheet · Self-Guided Study

The Consciousness of Creation

The week when everything begins, and the power to plant the intention of the whole year.

The opening week of the cycle · the Torah's first portion
Beresheet, a letra Bet

✦  This self-guided study is a synthesis of Michael Berg's teachings on the Beresheet Torah portion, published by the Kabbalah Centre.

1 · This Week's Portion

The Torah does not begin with the first letter of the alphabet. It begins with the second, Bet, and kabbalists read that choice as the first lesson of the year. Aleph is Oneness, and it would have been the obvious opening. But Bet opens Berachah, blessing, and that is where the Creator chooses to start.

Closed behind, open ahead

Look at the shape of the letter. Bet is closed on three sides and open only toward the front. The kabbalistic reading is direct: the past is sealed, there is no going back to repair it. What remains, and what the week asks for, is to keep creating in the one direction still open.

A house for the Light

Bet is also the first letter of Bayit, house. That changes what Creation is: not an explosion, but the building of a dwelling for the Creator's Light. The week's work has the patience of someone raising a house, brick by brick, rather than the hurry of someone waiting on a miracle.

The whole year fits inside this week

The word Beresheet holds Bará Shit, "created six", and Rosh, head and beginning, inside it. That is why kabbalists treat this week with particular care: the consciousness planted here sets the tone for the twelve months that follow.

2 · Key Points of the Week

It begins with Bet, not Aleph

The Torah does not open with the first letter. It opens with the second, because Bet is the letter of Berachah, blessing, not of judgment.

Closed behind, open ahead

The shape of Bet is closed on three sides and open only to the front. The past is sealed, and what remains is to create.

A house for the Light

Bet opens the word Bayit, house. Creation begins as the building of a dwelling for the Light.

The Two that hides the One

Bet's numerical value is 2, duality. The work is to reveal the Aleph hidden inside the Two.

The consciousness that tunes the year

Beresheet holds Bará Shit and Rosh, head and beginning. What is planted this week tunes the whole year.

2 · In Short

Kabbalah teaches that the Torah opens with Bet, not Aleph, because before Creation every letter presented itself before the Creator, and only Bet, carrying the energy of Berachá (blessing), was chosen to begin everything. Its shape, sealed toward the past and open toward the future, invites us to leave what has already happened sealed and move forward in a consciousness of blessing, not fear. Bet is also the first letter of Bayit, house: Creation isn't random expansion, but the building of a dwelling where the Light can live. And since Bet's value is 2, we carry the world's duality, Light and vessel, giving and receiving, with the purpose of revealing the Oneness, the Aleph, hidden within it. Beresheet isn't an event of the past: it's the continuous act of creation renewed every time we awaken Light through our consciousness.

4 · Phrases for Contemplation

  • "Beresheet doesn't describe a past event, it's the continuous act of creation happening now."
  • "Through you, Bet, I will begin creation, for you represent blessing, not curse."
  • "The past is sealed. The Light opens before me. I build forward, with blessing, not fear."

5 · Takeaways

Work of the week
  • Turn reaction into creation: choose to meet chaos with consciousness, not impulse.
  • Turn doubt into blessing: begin from Bet's open side, not from fear.
  • Turn fear into forward movement: the past is sealed, the Light is ahead.
  • Build a Bayit: make your actions, words and relationships a dwelling for the Light.
  • Start something: however small, a project, a healing, a study, that manifests Light in a new form.
