Kabbalah places great emphasis on the awesome power of thought to the extent that even objects and experiences are also subject to thought's energy-intelligence. Mind and body, thought and environment are inseparable. When a person falls ill, it is therefore not just the disease that must be treated, but the entire self.
One of the most dramatic cases illustrating the power of mind over body was reported more than half a century ago by Dr Bruno Klopfer, a researcher involved in the testing of a drug known as Krebiozen. In 1950, Krebiozen had received sensational national publicity as a "cure" for cancer; it was being tested by the American Medical Association and by the United States Food and Drug Administration. One of Dr. Klopfer's patients had developed advanced lymphatic cancer, with tumor masses throughout his body. When the patient learned that Dr. Klopfer was involved with Krebiozen, he begged to be given the drug. After just one dose, his tumors disappeared. His recovery was astonishing, and he regained enough strength to resume a normal life.
When published reports of the AMA and FDA claimed that the drug was ineffective, however, the patient took a dramatic turn for the worse. His cancer returned, and he once again became bedridden. In a desperate attempt to save him, his physician told him that the reports were false and that double-strength doses of Krebiozen would produce better results. Actually, the injections consisted of sterile water. But the patient again experienced rapid remission, and once again the tumor masses melted. Soon he even went back to his hobby of flying.
Then the FDA announced its final findings, which appeared in the media as follows: "Tests conclusively show Krebiozen is worthless in the treatment of cancer." The man died a few days later.
How can this "placebo effect" be explained? Science is only now beginning to map the routes between the brain and other parts of the body. But there can be no doubt that the mind acts as a healer as well as a destroyer. Taking this idea one step further, Kabbalah suggests that the mind can extend its influence over the entire cosmos. The Zohar clearly states that the cosmic influences that lie at the heart of all misfortune and illness should be subject to human control. These influences can be made to behave in accordance with humanity's directives. Kabbalistic teachings demonstrate how people can exercise substantial influence over medical conditions that were once considered to lie beyond conscious control.
