1 · Key Points

InsightWhy it matters
Month of the Sun and of polarity an energy that can make us shine or burn. The "solar" pressure is the heat needed to turn coal into diamond.
Seeds inside a shell every blessing comes wrapped in a klipah (negativity). We must remove the shell to reveal the core of Light.
The two halves of Av the first, intense, culminates on the 9th of Av; the second turns toward the 15th of Av (Tu b'Av), of great Light. It teaches us to find the greatest Light at the point of deepest darkness.
Abundant fire energy the month favors leadership and creativity, but without an earth-and-water base there is a risk of impulsiveness.Fire favors leadership; it also calls for reviewing our words and for humility.
The spiritual lesson let go of perfectionism, embrace inspiration and balance ego and heart. It prepares the vessel for true prosperity.
Tisha b'Av (the 9th of Av) the darkest day of the month.A moment of deep introspection and a chance to reveal hidden Light.

2 · In Short

Karen Berg teaches that the month of Leo carries equal pressures of Light and of negativity; these pressures are the heat needed to turn our flaws into spiritual diamonds. Michael Berg goes deeper: every blessing comes "wrapped" in a negative shell, like the first half of Av itself, which holds the 9th of Av, the darkest day, right before one of the most luminous days, Tu b'Av.

The month's own energy confirms the lesson: abundant fire fuels creativity and leadership, but without an earth-and-water base we risk impulsiveness. So the New Moon of Leo invites us to embrace the pressure, remove the shell and uncover the seed of Light in every challenge, especially in the weeks leading up to Tisha b'Av, using humility, a review of our words and a balance between heart and ego.

3 · Phrases for Contemplation

  • "The pressure we feel is exactly what we need to turn coal into diamond."
  • "Every great revelation of Light arrives with a negative shell that must be removed."
  • "The challenge and the blessing are not two events; they are one reality in two stages."
  • "This is a month to dare to shine, do it with humility."

4 · Takeaways

Takeaways
  • Pressure is a tool: accept the "solar tests" to reveal your inner diamond.
  • See the shell: look for the seed of Light in every hard situation, especially before the 9th of Av.
  • Balance fire and humility: shine without ego, lead with heart.
  • Refine your speech: this is a time to review promises, stories and dramatizations.
  • Plan for Tu b'Av: use the shift of energy on the 15th of Av to celebrate love, union and gratitude.

5 · Action Plan · the whole month

0 of 6 periods complete
1
New Moon of Av · Rosh Chodesh · July 15, 2026
"Diamond" meditation

Seal the intention to turn pressure into radiance throughout the month.

light a candle and open the Zohar (portion Matot). Breathe in for 5 s, hold 5 s, breathe out 5 s (10 cycles). Visualize a ray of sunlight entering through the crown, pressing on your flaws (coal) and converting them into diamonds of Light that radiate from the heart.

TipAt the end, recite 3× the mantra-verse והוצאתי אתכם מתחת סבלות מצרים: Ve-hotseti etchem mitachat sivlot Mitzrayim ("And I will bring you out from under the burdens of Egypt.", Exodus 6:6).

Week 1 · July 16–18
Shell Journal

Train the mind to see the blessing inside the negativity.

each night, note 3 irritations or reactions and ask "What seed of Light is here?", answer in two lines. Extra reading: Karen Berg's article "Becoming More Spiritual".

TipAt the week's end, reread the journal and choose one insight to share on Shabbat.
3
Week 2 · July 19–20
Word Detox

Align speech with the heart, keeping Leo's fire from turning into criticism.

put a rubber band on your wrist; each time you complain or judge, switch it to the other arm and reframe the sentence constructively. At day's end, log how many switches.

TipTry to halve the number of switches by the end of the week.
4
Week 3 · July 21–22, the days before the 9th of Av
An act of humility

Break the ego to balance the leonine fire and open a channel of Light on the eve of the most intense day.

(choose one day): ask for honest feedback from someone you admire; listen without justifying yourself; thank them and note one improvement to make. Pre-Tisha b'Av: read "Finding the Seed of Light Within", by Michael Berg.

TipAfter the feedback, make a small donation or an anonymous act of kindness to "seal" the humility.
5
Tisha b'Av · the 9th of Av (sunset to sunset) · July 22–23
24 hours of restriction

Find the Light within the mourning and turn destruction into a blueprint for rebuilding.

if possible: at night, read Eichah (Lamentations); in the morning, Psalm 137 and a "loss into gain" meditation (the seed inside the shell). Key question: "What rebuilding do I want to create out of this pain?" In the last hour before sunset, write a 3-step rebuilding plan.

TipEven without fasting, practice restriction: avoid screens, small talk and music until the afternoon.
6
From the 9th of Av to Tu b'Av (the 15th of Av) · July 23–29
Planting seeds

Turn the switch from negative energy to love and expansion, materializing the rebuilding plan.

choose one project (professional, study or relationship) and take one concrete step each day until Tu b'Av. Log the progress every night.

TipShare your intention with a study partner or mentor for accountability.
