Before you begin
Light a candle

On a tzadik's hilulah, lighting a candle opens a channel. The flame represents the soul, light that rises and is never lessened by kindling others. As we light it in honor of Yosef HaTzadik, we invite his presence and his merit into our home and our life. Light the candle, close your eyes, and say:

יוֹסֵף הַצַּדִּיק, זְכוּתוֹ יָגֵן עָלֵינוּ. אָמֵן
Yosef HaTzadik, zechuto yagen aleinu. Amen.
"Joseph the Righteous, may his merit protect us. Amen."

1 · Key Points

2 · Who Joseph Was

Jacob's beloved son, a dreamer, envied by his brothers. Sold into slavery as a teenager. Bought by Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officers. Propositioned by Potiphar's wife, he refused, and for that he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. He stayed there twelve years.

Twelve years. And in not one of them did he call himself a victim.

In Potiphar's house he became head of the servants. In prison he became a counsellor and dream interpreter for the other prisoners. Before Pharaoh he became governor of Egypt and steward of all the wealth of the most abundant country on earth. Wherever they put him, he rose, because he did not depend on the place. The Light he carried was not in the title; it was in the consciousness.

And when he met again the brothers who sold him, there was no revenge, no grudge, no score to settle. That is the signature of Yesod: a pure channel, without ego.

3 · In Short

Kabbalah teaches that on the anniversary of Joseph the Righteous's elevation, all the Light he gathered, certainty, prosperity, and the power to unite heaven and earth, is released to whoever consciously connects. Joseph governed Egypt because he never wavered before adversity: instead of falling to his difficulties, he took advantage of them and reached the highest spiritual level available in each situation. That is why his hilulah is a window for learning to convert obstacle into channel. As we invoke his name during the 24 hours, we touch the bridge between the invisible 99% and the physical 1%, and draw that strength into our own blockages.

4 · Phrases for Contemplation

  • "On the day a tzadik leaves this world, all the Light of that soul becomes available to us."
  • "Joseph lived in the physical world but became the chariot of Yesod, to help each one of us connect to the access point for all blessings."
  • "Yesod is the neck of the bottle; Malchut is the cup that receives."
  • "Joseph had 100% certainty that his process came from the Light, so he didn't care what he had to go through, or that it took twelve years."
  • "There is no better painkiller in the world than true sharing.", Karen Berg
  • "Joseph's certainty turned a prison into a palace. The same certainty can turn our challenges into prosperity."

5 · Takeaways

Takeaways
  • Connect at the right time: the 24-hour window amplifies any prayer or meditation.
  • Certainty = Abundance: certainty shows up as giving without fear of what will happen to us, knowing the Light provides constantly.
  • A practical bridge: use the energy to materialize spiritual ideas into concrete projects.
  • A pure channel: Yesod means being a channel with no ego. Where does your giving still have an "I" in it?
  • Forgive before sleep: release every grievance of the day, Yesod does not flow through a pipe clogged with resentment.
  • Invite the presence: calling "Yosef HaTzadik" with clear intention amplifies the connection.
  • A hilulah is a celebration: joy, study and acts of kindness expand the channel of Light.

6 · Yesod, the Neck of the Bottle

The Tree of Life has ten Sefirot. The tenth, Malchut, is the only one with physicality, what we can see, touch, measure. It is the 1%. The other 99% of our life happens above it, unseen, like the force inside a seed that decides how the apple tree will grow.

Directly above Malchut is Yesod. Yesod is the funnel. Everything, health, children, wisdom, success, creativity, even an immaterial boost to the immune system, must pass through Yesod to manifest down here. If Malchut is ego-driven ("me, me, me"), Yesod is where the blessings of the upper worlds are funnelled through, no ego, no noise.

Joseph is the chariot of that level. Raising our consciousness to Yesod is, literally, putting our hand on the tap of our own prosperity.

Yesod correspondences: the reproductive channel and finances; full responsibility for our actions; the capacity to forgive; knowing the Light is in complete control of our lives.

7 · Joseph's Formula · 3 Steps

Step 1 · Restriction

Joseph refused Potiphar's wife knowing it would land him in jail. He could have lived comfortably as a favoured slave. He chose restriction, because real greatness is in growth, not in comfort.

→ Today: restrict precisely where your reactive impulse is strongest.

Step 2 · Joy in the process

Most of us say, "I'll restrict as long as I don't have to suffer." Not Joseph. Because he chose the restriction, he could also choose joy inside the pain. He had 100% certainty the process came from the Light, so twelve years did not break him. The Zohar (Miketz, 55) teaches us to rejoice at whatever comes upon us, good or bad, and to give thanks.

→ Today: walk through your process singing, not complaining.

Step 3 · Sharing

In prison, Joseph did not sit chewing on his own troubles, he tended to the other prisoners' troubles. That very care brought him to Pharaoh's wine steward, and the steward brought him to freedom. Karen Berg: when you feel pain, the best medicine is to do something for someone else.

→ Today: pull someone out of their hole while you are still in yours.

8 · Dreams, Reading the 99%

Joseph is the dream interpreter. That is not a footnote: the dream is precisely where the 99% speaks to the 1%. Pharaoh saw seven skinny cows swallow seven fat cows, and no one could read it. Joseph read it: seven years of plenty, seven years of famine. And in reading it, he turned an invisible image into public policy, full granaries, a whole nation fed. That is Yesod in action: the metaphysical becoming physical.

Kabbalah teaches that dreams show us our negative traits and what we must change in order to grow. Joseph's consciousness is not "having dreams", it is having the courage to interpret them and then act.

Night practice

→ Before sleep, ask for an answer. On waking, write whatever comes, unedited. Then ask: what is this asking me to change?
