Shabbat of Sukkot · Michael Berg

Grasping the Light of the Creator

Seven days in the Holy of Holies: the one time of year when anyone can hold the Light in their own hands.

Lecture · Shabbat of Sukkot

✦  This page is a synthesis of Michael Berg's lecture Shabbat Sukkot: Blessings from the Hands of the Creator, on the Kabbalah Centre's OneHouse. It is only a map: listen to Michael Berg directly.

1 · Key Points

2 · In Short

Michael Berg opens by saying that Sukkot doesn't ask for new information. It asks for meditation. The Song of Songs describes what happens in these days as an embrace: the Creator brings us into the innermost chamber. In the physical world, the closest place to that was the Holy of Holies in the Temple, open to a single soul, a single time each year. The kabbalists teach that on Sukkot each of us, with the right meditation, desire and consciousness, enters that place for seven days, and the effect of every thought inside it isn't ten or a thousand times greater, it is a billion times greater. It doesn't matter who we are or what our level is. What matters is how aware we are of where we are.

The Midrash reveals the secret of the four species: the etrog, the lulav, the myrtle and the willow each represent the Light of the Creator itself. That's why, on the Shabbat of Sukkot, when we don't use the physical tools, we hold them at an even higher level. During the year we draw the Light through prayers and actions. Only once does the Torah tell of a human being who grasped the Creator: when Moshe prevented the destruction of the Israelites. To grasp is to have the ability to say "no, this is how it will be". The Ramban calls this the deep secret of the four species, and Rav Naftali of Ropshitz says what seems impossible: on Sukkot a person takes the Light of the Creator in their hands and can do with it whatever they desire. At the same time, the Rosh teaches that by shaking the four species we weaken the opposing force, which wakes up before us every day. And, like the child in the candy store who preferred the owner's big hands to his own, we ask V'hasi'enu et birkat moadecha: may the blessings come from the Creator's hands.

3 · Drawing or Grasping

The heart of the lecture is a difference that is small in form and enormous in consciousness.

During the yearOn Sukkot
I'm on a low level and draw the Light down through prayers, connections and actions.Anyone, in any spiritual state, can grasp the Light of the Creator.
I'm connected to the Creator.Hashem Li, lo ira: when the Creator is mine, I fear nothing.
The opposing force works at 100% of its strength.Through the na'anu'im, it drops to 90, 70, 50%, according to our connection.
I try to take the blessings with my own hands.I ask for them to come from the Creator's hands, which are endless.

4 · Phrases for Contemplation

  • "Depending on the level of our consciousness is the amount of Light we will receive."
  • "I am in the Holy of Holies, but consciousness is everything."
  • "When the Creator is mine, I can overcome any kind of fear."
  • "Human hands, no matter how big they are, compared to the Creator's hands, are small."

5 · Takeaways

Takeaways
  • In the sukkah, meditate more than you socialize: community is a blessing, but the most important work there is meditation.
  • Remember where you are: every time you sit in the sukkah, tell yourself "I am in the Holy of Holies".
  • Trade drawing for grasping: this time, don't ask from afar. Hold the Light of the Creator.
  • Say Hashem Li: I want the Creator to be mine, to move through any fear this year.
  • Weaken the opposing force now, so you don't face it at 100% strength over the next twelve months.
  • Invest real effort (y'gia): according to Rav Ashlag, it is the only factor that separates those who complete the soul's journey.

6 · Action Plan · 5 Moments in the Sukkah

0 of 5 moments complete
1
Moment 1 · Sitting in the sukkah
Enter the Holy of Holies

Remembering where I am multiplies the effect of every thought.

before eating or talking, stop for a minute and say inwardly: I am in the innermost chamber, in the Holy of Holies. Only then begin.

TipDo this every time you enter the sukkah, not only the first.
2
Moment 2 · The four species
Hold the Light

What I hold in my hands represents the Light of the Creator itself.

as you hold the lulav and etrog (or, on Shabbat, as you picture them), meditate that you are not holding branches, you are holding the Light of the Creator.

TipOn the Shabbat of Sukkot, the connection happens at an even higher level, without the physical tool.
3
Moment 3 · Facing a fear
Hashem Li, lo ira

When the Creator is mine, there is no fear I can't overcome.

choose one concrete fear you're carrying into the new year. Hold it in consciousness and repeat: I want the Creator to be mine.

TipRepeat the phrase a hundred times over the day. The more we meditate, the stronger it becomes.
4
Moment 4 · In the na'anu'im
Shake the opposing force

Every movement diminishes the force that tries to separate us from the Light.

as you shake the four species, tell the opposing force: you thought you'd have 100% of your force against me this year? No.

TipThink of one specific reactive pattern you want to weaken over the next twelve months.
5
Moment 5 · In Musaf and throughout the day
The Creator's hands

We don't want to be the ones grabbing; we want to receive from hands that have no limit.

remember the child in the candy store. Say, sitting in the sukkah: V'hasi'enu et birkat moadecha, and release the need to control how the blessings will arrive.

TipEnd the day giving thanks for one blessing you couldn't have grabbed on your own.
Shabbat of Sukkot Mantra

"V'hasi'enu et birkat moadecha. May the blessings of this cosmic window come from the Creator's hands, not from mine."

Sit in the sukkah knowing where you are: inside the innermost chamber, with the Light of the Creator within reach of your hands. Chag Sameach.
