17 Cheshvan · The Day of the Flood

A Flood of Mercy

Tradition marks tonight as the beginning of the Flood. The Kabbalah Centre teaches that it was, above all, mercy.

✦  This page gathers what the Kabbalah Centre teaches about the Flood and the month of Cheshvan, in articles published on onehouse.kabbalah.com, and says clearly what comes from other sources.

1 · The Day

According to tradition, the Flood began on 17 Cheshvan (Genesis 7:11), and the earth dried on the 27th of the following year. This year, the 17th begins at sundown on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, and runs until sundown on Wednesday, the 28th. That date comes from Jewish tradition, not from a specific Kabbalah Centre teaching. The Kabbalah Centre speaks about the Flood and the whole month, and that is what is gathered here.

Bitter or exalted

The month of Cheshvan is called Mar Cheshvan, "bitter," partly because of the Flood. The Kabbalah Centre teaches that in it we can transform our consciousness from mar, bitter, into its reverse, ram, "exalted and powerful." The two words have the same letters in reverse order.

A flood of mercy

The kabbalists do not accept the literal reading of the Flood as a disaster. According to the article "A Flood of Mercy," the Rav teaches that through the channel of Chesed the world drew a flood of kindness. Water was chosen to heal the world, not to destroy it.

2 · The Consciousness of the Month

Mar becomes Ram

The month has none of the Cosmic Openings of Tishrei, so it feels dark. That is exactly where the greatest chance for transformation lies.

Water that heals

The Flood came to clear the chaos of its time. Without cleansing there is no fulfillment, today either.

The vessel must grow

After the Cosmic Openings of Tishrei, the emptiness shows that the vessel cannot hold that much Light. The work is to enlarge it.

Consciousness is everything

Noah resisted believing in the Flood for fear of creating it with his mind. Rav Berg used to say: consciousness is everything.

3 · How to Move Through This Day

Practices for today and tomorrow
  • Choose mercy. The article says that this month we have no other choice but to show kindness and mercy. In every conversation tomorrow, ask before answering: where is the Chesed here?
  • Read the emptiness as growth. If a sense of letdown comes after the Cosmic Openings of Tishrei, it shows the vessel being enlarged. Do not compare yourself with your past, only with who you can become.
  • Ask to be cleansed of chaos. A practical suggestion: name one habit or pattern that creates disorder in your life and ask that the water of mercy wash it away.
  • Decide from consciousness. See yourself as a powerful being with a limitless vessel, and act from that image, not from fear.
  • Bring the inspiration down to the concrete. Hasidic sources say Cheshvan is the month of the year's practical work. Choose one concrete action today: a favor, a donation, a phone call.

Practices 3 and 5 are applications suggested from the texts. The underlying teachings are in the sources below.
